Driving Sustainability Forward
On Track to Net Zero: Ballast Nedam’s CO₂ Reduction Milestone
Ballast Nedam achieved a CO₂ emission of 8,094 tonnes in the first half of 2025 (Scope 1 & 2 including business travel), marking a 5% reduction relative to revenue compared to the same period last year. This progress was made possible through:
- Electrification of the vehicle fleet, powered by green energy from Ballast Nedam's own wind turbines.
- Zero-emission construction sites, such as the Rijnkade Arnhem project.
- Use of battery storage systems and emission-free equipment.
Horizons: A Net-Positive Living Environment
Developed by Ballast Nedam, a Rönesans Holding group company, Horizons generates energy, sequesters carbon, recycles water, brings nature and people together.- Horizons delivers exactly that by generating 33% more energy than it consumes from renewable sources.
- Thanks to its natural materials it creates an impact that will offset 3,000 tonnes of carbon. That is equivalent to the carbon captured by approximately 143,000 trees in one year.
- 62% of the materials are recycled and 96% are reusable.
- Every day, it treats 150,000 litres of wastewater. This equals the daily drinking water needs of 6,000 people.
MAOG High-Standard Railway Project Begins Freight Testing
The testing phase for freight transport has begun on the Toprakkale–Bahçe section of the Mersin, Adana, Osmaniye, Gaziantep (MAOG) High-Standard Railway Project. The project serves as a strategic bridge linking Eastern Anatolia’s production hubs to the Mediterranean ports via İskenderun Port. Once completed:
- The travel time between Mersin and Gaziantep will be reduced from 6 hours to 2 hours and 15 minutes.
- The electrified line will prevent 157,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually.
- Compared to road transport, energy consumption per tonne will decrease by 80%.
Strengthening Partnership with Euler Hermes
In 2024, three wind energy projects with a total capacity of 189 MW were initiated in collaboration with Exportkreditgarantien der Bundesrepublik Deutschland (Hermesdeckungen)- marking the first YEKA RES-3 financing in Türkiye. With a project financing of $165 million, this also became Rönesans’s first ECA-covered transaction in Türkiye as a borrower.Rönesans Holding is now strengthening this valuable partnership even further through a €50 million Shopping Line facility, credited by Santander for its Netherlands-based group company, Ballast Nedam. This transaction also stands out as the first Shopping Line Facility ever executed under a German Federal Export Credit Guarantee.
