Istanbul’s healthcare hub, the Basaksehir Çam & Sakura City Hospital opens

21 May 2020
The Basaksehir Çam & Sakura (Cherry Blossoms) City Hospital, which was jointly built by Rönesans Healthcare Investment and Japan’s Sojitz under the Public-Private Sector-Partnership (PPP) model, has opened in an official ceremony on May 21 with the attendance by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in person and by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe through video conferencing.
The hospital, a robust symbol which further strengthens the eternal friendship ties between Turkey and Japan, has also been renamed as “Basaksehir Çam & Sakura City Hospital.” While the pine tree is a symbol of abundance and blessing in Turkish culture, sakura symbolizes true beauty in Japanese culture.

The Basaksehir Çam & Sakura City Hospital, which is also the “World’s Largest Seismically Isolated Building” with 2,068 seismic isolators installed in its main hospital building, was built in a record short time period of 32 months and delivered before the planned date.

The Basaksehir Çam & Sakura City Hospital, which serves as an exemplary model with its latest technologies and is set to further strengthen the strategic cooperation between Turkey and Japan, has opened in an official ceremony. The hospital, which was built by Ronesans Healthcare Investment, one of the leading healthcare investors in Turkey, jointly with Sojitz, one of the largest Japanese investment and trade corporations, in a record short time period of 32 months, has thus been delivered before the planned date despite the challenges of the pandemic.

The Basaksehir Çam & Sakura City Hospital, which has the capacity to serve 32,700 patients on daily basis with its 2,682 bed capacity in total and an indoor construction area of 1 million square meters, is set to provide healthcare services not only to Istanbul residents, but also to all in the neighboring region. The hospital, which was built in a total investment of 195 billion Japanese Yen, was also equipped with world-class cutting-edge technologies against the earthquake risk. The Basaksehir Çam & Sakura City Hospital has already been registered as the world’s largest seismically isolated building with 2,068 seismic isolators installed in its main hospital building.

Regarding the official opening of the Basaksehir Çam & Sakura City Hospital, Ronesans Healthcare Investment Chairman Kamil Yanikomeroglu said: “We are proud to complete our project with our distinguished business partner Sojitz in the framework of the Ministry of Health-PPP Program. We are also delighted to see that this cooperation, a meaningful symbol of the endless Turkish-Japanese friendship, is now carried on in the hospital’s name. Our hospital will be hereinafter called as the Basaksehir Çam & Sakura City Hospital. While the pine tree is a symbol of abundance and blessing in Turkish culture, sakura symbolizes true beauty in Japanese culture. We sincerely believe that the Basaksehir Çam & Sakura City Hospital will further strengthen the eternal friendship ties between Turkey and Japan.”

“The hospital will by all means make Istanbul the healthcare hub of the surrounding region. By completing this key project before the planned date despite the unprecedented conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic, which hits almost all countries in the world, we are delighted to be able to enable Istanbul residents and others to take reliable and high technology healthcare services,” Yanikomeroglu added.

In regard to the opening of the Basaksehir Çam & Sakura City Hospital, Shohei Goda of Sojtiz said: “We are pleased to be with all of you today to mark the opening of the Basaksehir Çam & Sakura City Hospital. To us, this has been a valuable journey, which commenced by our strong faith on the Turkish economy and our business partner Ronesans. It is a great honor for us to be a part of the construction of the Basaksehir Çam & Sakura City Hospital, which has already become of the best hospitals in the world. By counting on the international power and professionalism of Ronesans Holding, we invested in Turkey and we are very delighted about the result. As Sojitz, we had a total 81 billion Japanese Yen worth investments across the world in fiscal year 2019. Now we are preparing to carry the know-how and experiences from our investment in Turkey to other countries. The Basaksehir Çam & Sakura City Hospital is an indicator of our economic confidence into Turkey as well as a symbol of the deep friendship ties between Japan and Turkey. We always wish health to our Turkish friends.”

Awarded financing deals
The Basaksehir Çam & Sakura City Hospital, which was built in the framework of the PPP model and supported by nine global financial institutions, including Japan’s state-run JBIC bank and NEXI, a Japanese insurance corporation owned by the Japanese state, for a 195 billion Japanese Yen investment, is set to become one of  the most distinguished healthcare complexes of the world.
