Excavation for the building of the Gotthard Base Tunnel, first developed as an idea in Switzerland back in 1960, began seventeen years ago.
Excavation for the building of the Gotthard Base Tunnel, first developed as an idea in Switzerland back in 1960, began seventeen years ago.
The construction was completed by Renaissance Construction of Rönesans Holding and its Swiss subsidiary Heitkamp Swiss. The 57 kilometer-long, 2300-meter-deep Gotthard Base Tunnel in the Swiss Alps is dubbed “longest and deepest” railroad tunnel of the world, reaching up to a total of 152 kilometers length along with access tunnels and cross connections.
The tunnel, the building of which was completed in 2016, increases transportation capacity throughout the Alps, reduces environmental damage and shortens journey time by connecting Zurich to Lugano and Milan.
The grand opening ceremony hosted major leaders of Europe including Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany; Matteo Renzi, Prime Minister of Italy; Heinz Fischer, President of Austria; François Hollande, President of France and Johann Schneider-Ammann, President of Switzerland.
