The world’s leading real estate exhibition, MIPIM, rewarded Turkey with its first award in the health field

Başakşehir Çam and Sakura City Hospital won the MIPIM 2022 Best Health Complex Award Başakşehir Çam and Sakura City Hospital, “The World’s Largest Building with Seismic Isolation,” won the “Best Health Complex” award at the International Real Estate Exhibition (MIPIM) 2022 and became the first project in Turkey to receive an award in this category. Başakşehir Çam and Sakura City Hospital provided the best solutions to the problems encountered in a healthcare facility and created a high-quality environment for patient care. It was well ahead of its competitors with its aesthetic qualities sustainability features, and the value was added to the region.
The International Real Estate Exhibition (MIPIM) 2022 has been keeping its finger on the pulse of the real estate industry since 1991. The event was held in Cannes this year with the theme of “Guiding Urban Transformation.” Within the scope of the traditional competition of the fair, the MIPIM Awards 2022 jury selected the most distinguished projects of the real estate sector worldwide by evaluating them in terms of groundbreaking innovation, architecture, environmental attributes, integration, and their impact on society.

Forty-five finalists competed in 12 categories at the event, and the winning projects were announced at a special ceremony.

Left Its Two Major Rivals Behind

Istanbul Başakşehir Çam and Sakura City Hospital competed in the “Best Health Complex” category with the Pavilion (Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania) project from the USA and the Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen (SDCC) project from Denmark.

Başakşehir Çam and Sakura City Hospital provided the best solutions to the problems encountered in a healthcare facility and created a high-quality environment for patient care. It was well ahead of its competitors with its aesthetic qualities, sustainability features, and a worthy award winner. This was a first for Turkey at the 31st MIPIM Awards.

The World’s Largest Building with Seismic Isolation Against Earthquakes

Başakşehir Çam and Sakura City Hospital hold the title of “The World’s Largest Building with Seismic Isolators” against earthquakes, with 2,068 seismic isolators placed in the main hospital building Başakşehir Çam and Sakura City Hospital, built by the Ministry of Health and Istanbul PPP Health Investment A.Ş (Rönesans Holding & Sojitz Healthcare), through a public-private partnership model, is Turkey’s third-largest healthcare investment project and was put into service in 2020. The integrated health campus, which has three heliport areas and consists of 10 blocks, includes the General Hospital, Children’s Hospital, Gynecology Hospital, Oncology Hospital, Neurology, Orthopedic Sciences Hospital, Cardiovascular Diseases Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Hospital, and Psychiatric Hospital. Başakşehir Çam and Sakura City Hospital have 2,682 beds, the capacity to examine 35,000 patients as outpatients and perform 1,000 operations per day. Başakşehir Çam and Sakura City Hospital has the largest intensive care capacity in Europe with 456 intensive care beds and has managed the continuation of organ transplantation and other operations without interruption during the pandemic.

Sustainable and Exemplary design

At Başakşehir Çam and Sakura City Hospital, rainwater is collected in a 3,600 m² tank and used to irrigate the 171,842 m² landscaped area. The energy collected from the solar panels installed on the buildings meets the floors’ hot water needs and the landscape lighting’s electricity requirements. The health campus was built with “Energy and Environment Friendly” designs and held a green building GOLD LEED Certificate.

The Başakşehir Çam and Sakura Hospital project was previously awarded the “Best RFID/IOT Application in Health” award by RFID Journal. It also won the Merit Award in the “Health Services” category of the “Global Best Projects” competition, organized for the eighth time by the international construction industry magazine Engineering News-Record (ENR), which has been published since 1917, and which evaluated participating projects from 6 continents and 21 countries.
